What Is Counselling

Counselling is a type of talking therapy, in which a trained professional can help you to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that you may be struggling with. You will be offered a safe and confidential space in which your counsellor can help you to make sense of your experiences and find your own solutions. Your counsellor will not diagnose you or advise you about what to do, but will do their best to understand your perspectives and experiences.

There are many reasons that people seek counselling, and what you talk about will depend on your unique requirements, but some examples of topics that could be explored include: childhood experiences, relationships, past and present life events, and situations you find difficult.

Counselling works best if you feel you can be open and honest with your counsellor so it’s important that you are comfortable with your counsellor, that you feel listened to, and that you feel that they can relate to you.

What To Expect

Counselling usually takes place over a minimum of 6 sessions, however, most people find between 12-20 sessions are needed in order to achieve their therapy goals. Some people also prefer to work long-term with counsellors, and these options can be discussed during your first session.

You will meet one-to-one with your counsellor, and whether sessions take place virtually or in-person, it’s important that you are in a confidential space and will not be interrupted or overheard.

The initial free session will involve an assessment questionnaire which your counsellor will complete with you – this will include questions about your reasons for engaging in counselling, and about any expectations you have, or goals you would like to achieve during therapy. Your counsellor will explain their way of working, and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Contracting is an important part of the first session too, so the counsellor will talk through their terms with you, and will give you a written contract to sign.

The success of counselling relies considerably on the relationship built between you and your counsellor, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with them. The first session is an introduction, and a chance for you and the counsellor to decide whether you feel okay to work together. If you do decide to go ahead sessions will usually take place on a weekly basis, and each session will last up to 1 hour.
